Justin Moorhouse - Who's the Daddy?

October 7th 2007 22:12

Basically: Thin on the material and should learn to sense the mood of an audience and when to back off. Pretty good though, neither one to seek out nor one to avoid.

Leeds City Varieties, awesome theatre, Justin Moorhouse, didn't entirely know what to expect.

In the show posters he looks like a loveable, huggable teddy bear - a kind face... apparently not so much. More of the aggressive northerner about him with an "I don't give a f*ck if I offend attitude" but with this came, well, I'll be honest one big section of the show was really uncomfortable to watch.

He quickly uncovered that there was a 12 year old in the box closest to the stage with his dad and new step-mum. 12 is young for a comedy gig, I accept that, and a bit of slating a given. But he went on and on and on along the lines of "well if you think this is suitable... you are clearly an incompetent parent" etc. Fine. Even that I can deal with.

When you start asking a 12 year old boy about why his parents split up and try to establish if your dad had an affair with new step-mum it creates a bit of an atmosphere. I am up for a comic accidentally going a bit far and sensing it and retreating but he would not let it drop! Looking around many people looking uncomfortable not least the father and his new (month married) wife. Now, I totally accept if you sit in the boxes or the front row you may well get picked on; I accept that if you bring a young kid to a comedy show you might get mocked; and I don't think rules should be enforced on comedy except that it should be funny. And it wasn't. That was really unfair on that child and did not endear me to Moorhouse in the slightest.

Then strangely, after this, "I'll say what I like attitude" he gave a speech about his abhorrence for the C-word. He never entirely explained why, possibly got distracted, but he apparently imposes questionable restrictions.

HOWEVER, keep an open mind blah blah blah. And he's good. There's something 'bloke down the pub' about him but I don't mean that as a criticism. He's affable and entertaining but, for me, not terribly exciting. There wasn't that spark as with a Daniel Kitson or Adam Hills where you go "wow, this works and I looooove it".

Possibly drew an audience as "that bloke from Phoenix Nights" and I'd be surprised if he didn't disappoint a few. I'd see him again but he's not one to travel for.
