Get into the Christmas spirit....one penny at a time
December 13th 2006 03:49
Holidays are supposed to be full of joy and enjoyment but they usually end up being the most stressful, frustrating time of the year. There are gifts and more gifts and more gifts to buy…
Here are some tips for saving money during the holidays and still enjoying the spirit of Christmas
Plan in advance. Make a list of items that people on your regular gift list may like and purchase it whenever you see it on sale
Learn a craft be it knitting, painting or baking. You can make personalized one of a kind gifts for your family and friends that will be appreciated
Buy a group gift whenever applicable. For example get all the parents in your kids school to contribute whatever they can, so that your kids teacher gets one big useful item from the whole class.
Participate in a Secret Santa exchange so you get to buy only one gift for a person in the group
Delay a gift. Write a nice IOU, wrap a pretty ribbon around it and put it under the tree. You can buy exactly what person getting the gift wants without paying an exorbitant holiday premium
Of course, you still do have to buy some gifts. If you do need to buy a big item gift for Christmas, remember to use a credit card that gives cashback
Use artwork done throughout the year for Christmas cards. Better yet, use this occasion to take the phone and call everyone. You can bond over the phone and save on stamps.
Enlist the help of your kids for wrapping the gifts too. Buy a huge roll of white paper and let them go crazy stamping and printing on it. If you don’t have kids, offer to babysit your friend’s kids before Christmas as a pre Christmas gift and keep them busy creating their own artwork
..and remember the post Christmas sales for next years cards and ornaments.
HAPPY FRUGAL HOLIDAYS !

The other day I went to wrap a present and saw that I had run out of paper and I got my kids to draw on some paper and wrapped it. I got a few comments about it too
Love & stuff

Necessity IS the mother of invention - i'm sure the wrapping paper your kids made was more admired than regular wrapping paper
