Alan Carr

Basically, I sort of don't want to like him. But I do. End of. (Oh except more new material)
I'm not a massive fan of The Friday Night Poject which I don't think is that contoversial despite it's disconceting success. However, I just find something innately likeable about Alan Carr. He just has a funny demeanor and it's not simply "oh, look at him, he's so funny, he's so camp".
The audience in York were clearly fans of the Friday Night Project and greeted its every mention with raptuous applause. Having an enthusiastic audience makes all the difference for me as I have been to shows with great comics but the atmosphere is killed by a lucklustre response. Even though a lot of the heckling seemed to be simply odd noises or random outbursts such as "I'm from Scotland" it created an exciting environment.
I did really enjoy the show however... I was a bit disappointed that in the second half he resorted to material that I had seen him do several years ago and have seen on TV many times since. I felt this was slightly on the lazy side. I would have even preferred him to spend the time telling 'funny anecdotes' about his new television glory rather than simply rehash routines which I could honestly recite word for word.
Other than that there is little to say. As much as I would like to condemn the guy for TFNP I do find his relationship with Justin Lee Collins quite charming to watch - even if they do practically sit in each other's laps. He is a good, controlled performer; I love his expression and I enjoy watching him.
I would definitely see him again but probably brace myself for a portion of the same material again.
